SUMMER MOVIE PROGRAMHOW ITALY BECAME A COUNTRY AS SEEN THROUGH FILMSItaly is one of the youngest nations of the Western world. As a geographic entity, Italy has been in existence more than 3000 years, but as a unified country, Italy was born in 1861. In 2011, Italy will be 150 years old and the Italian government is planning a great celebration on March 17, a date that will be declared an official national holiday. The Museo ItaloAmericano began telling the story of Italy's unification in 2009 with two lectures by Professor Albert Milani, Building a Unified Italy: Expectations and Reality, 1858-1888, and Consolidating a Unified Italy: Social and Economic Problems 1888-1918. This summer we continue with a series of Italian movies that illustrate Italy's journey from a collection of small states often at war with one another, to today's unified country, a journey with many setbacks but also a great success story.
