Illustrated lecture by Professor Nathaniel Deutsch, Director of the Center for Jewish Studies at UC Santa Cruz, Director of the Institute for Humanities Research, Professor, Neufeld-Levin Endowed Chair in Holocaust Studies.
To provide context and a deeper understanding of William Castellana’s images of the Satmar Community of South Williamsburg, Brooklyn, Professor Deutsch will present an overview of Hasidic culture and lifestyle in America. Why do the Hasidim voluntarily segregate themselves from the non-Hasidic world? How does their self-separation compare to the forced sequestration of the Jews in Venice’s original ghetto?
