During the three-month exhibit NeoRealismo: The New Image in Italy, 1932-1960, we will offer the special program Italian Cinema and NeoRealismo, featuring a lecture and a film series presented by Dr. Karen D. Antonelli.

HISTORY OF ITALIAN CINEMA: AN OVERVIEW

Italian neo-realist cinema didn’t just happen by chance. This introductory lecture will present an overview of the history of Italian cinema from its beginnings to what is considered to be the first neorealist film: Rome, Open City (Roma città aperta).

There are many theories that attempt to define and explain Neorealism; we will explore some of these in order be able to view the films in an historic and cinematic context. In the next three weeks we will have the opportunity to learn about and view three films, each stylistically different and by different directors: Rome, Open City (Roma città aperta,1945) by Roberto Rossellini, Bicycle Thieves (Ladri di biciclette,
1948) by Vittorio De Sica, and Bitter Rice (Riso amaro, 1949) by Giuseppe De Santis.

Light refreshments to follow.
