d. 1988 Florence, ItalyPietro Annigoni was an Italian painter known for his realist portraits and landscapes. Born in Milan on June 7, 1910, he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence where he fostered the rigorous aesthetic that he maintained through his career. A strong advocate of Renaissance painting techniques, he co-founded the Modern Realist Painters in 1947, a group that rejected the doctrines of Abstraction, which was gaining popularity at that time. Annigoni received significant worldwide attention for his portraits of the powerful and famous, including Queen Elizabeth II, Pope John XXIII, and President John F. Kennedy. His works can be found in such prestigious museums as the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, the National Portrait Gallery of London and Vatican Museums in Rome.
