d. 1991 San Francisco, California Elio Benvenuto was born near the marble quarries of Pietrasanta, Italy, and learned to work marble in his father’s workshop. He was educated in Genoa and Florence before being elected mayor of Pietrasanta in 1945. He immigrated to San Francisco in 1948 and was soon commissioned to create seventeen sculptures for Corpus Christi Church in San Francisco. Benvenuto went on to spend his life educating and creating art. He participated in the San Francisco Art Festival twenty times, winning many awards and prizes. He was an instructor at SF Community College from 1960 – 1985 and Program Director of the San Francisco Art Commission from 1967 – 1981.
