b. 1973 Asolo (TV), ItalyRiccardo De Cal received his degree in Architecture at IUAV in Venice and has developed a career as an award winning documentary filmmaker and photographer. His research is focused on the themes of suspension of time and abstraction of spaces. In 2002 De Cal directed his first short film, presented at the Pitti palace in Florence. In 2005, he collaborated with the Benetton foundation, directing two documentary films – Memoriae Causa on Venetian architect Carlo Scarpa and Quando l’arte si tace about about the painter Gino Rossi. The films have been screened at various international film festivals and have won numerous awards. Memoriae Causa was also presented in London at Sir John Sloane’s museum in collaboration with the Royal Institute of British Architects, and at the Milan Triennale of Architecture. In 2007 De Cal received the RDC award, along with Carlo Lizzani, Silvio Soldini and Vincenzo Vincenzoni at the Third Millennium Festival in Rome. In 2012 and 2013 he directed two more films about Carlo Scarpa that were screened at the National Museum of XXI Century Arts in Rome and at Plazzo Grassi-Penault Foundation in Venice. In 2015 his short film about the Fluxus Art Movement.was shown at the Venice Art Biennale in the Venice Pavillion. In 2016, De Cal shot the images for the book Dream of Venice Architecture in collaboration with editor JoAnn Locktov. That same year the images were displayed at Querini Stampalia Foundation in Venice. These photographs were later donated to the Museo Italo Americano by JoAnn Locktov. In 2017 Dream of Venice Architecture won a silver medal in the 21st Independent Publisher Book Awards Contest.
