b. 1941 Livorno, ItalySandro Martini was born to Greek-Syrian parents in Livorno in 1941. He began exhibiting his works soon after graduating from the Accademia delle Belle Arti in Lucca in 1958 and quickly received national recognition. For six decades the focus of Martini’s work has been on the expansion of space and time, which is expressed by his almost exclusive use of primary colors and dynamic graphic lines.Some of his most significant exhibitions include Piazzale Michelangelo in Florence (1979), Palazzo Citterio in Milan (1981), Sala delle Grida at the Milan Stock Exchange (1983), an anthology exhibition at the Padiglione di Arte Contemporanea in Milan (1993), the installation of canvases and glass that occupies four floors of the Casa della Carità of Milan (2004). In 2012 he created, with the Canadian Architects Alliance, a Glass Memory installation (engraved glass and fresco), commissioned by the city of Toronto, Canada. In 2015 an exhibition entitled Atuttosesto was held at the Casa del Mantegna in Mantova and at the Galleria Centro Steccata in Parma.Martini’s works are in many private and public collections including Achenbach Foundation for the Graphic Arts, San Francisco; Museo d’Arte Moderna di Trento e Rovereto; Museo d’Arte Contemporanea, Livorno; Museum of Modern Art, New York; Ontario Museum, Toronto; among many others.Today Martini teaches etching and fresco techniques at the Kala Institute in Berkeley and still works closely with the Fine Art Center at the University of Massachusetts, which first invited him to the USA in 1978.
