About the Artist

b.1932 Lago, Calabria
d. 2001 San Diego, CABorn in Lago, Calabria, Italo Scanga immigrated to America shortly after World War II. The Scanga family settled in Detroit, Michigan, where Scanga worked for General Motors before serving in the US Army. He received his BA and MA degrees in sculpture from Michigan State University and taught at several colleges throughout the United States including the Rhode Island School of Design. He began exhibiting his own work in the late 1960s that consisted of installation pieces composed of farm implements, herbs, and saint iconography. Over the years, Scanga produced numerous works in several media including sculpture, frescoes, glass, paintings, and drawings. His work can be seen in over thirty museums around the world, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, MOMA in New York and the Art Institute of Chicago.
