b. 1953 Brotas, São Paulo, Brazil(Luis) Antonio Veronese was born in 1953 to parents of Italian origin in Brotas, near São Paulo, Brazil. The self-taught painter has been living in France since 2004.Before leaving Brazil, Veronese spent sixteen years teaching art to juvenile offenders in the Rio de Janiero penal system. He used painting as a form of psycho-therapeutical rehabilitation of adolescents between 12 and 18 years old. Some of the works produced by his students were exhibited in Geneva, Switzerland; the Salão Negro of the National Congress in Brasilia; and in the United States at the University of San Francisco.Through his work he became a strong advocate for children. In the 1980s and 1990s his paintings brought attention to the issue of violence against children on the streets and in the prison system. In 1995 he was chosen to be the representative artist of Brazil at the Commemoration of the 50th Anniversary of the United Nations. In 1998, he was invited to speak at the UN Commission on Human Rights in Geneva, and the same year was the artist representing Brazil at the Meeting of Wives of Heads of State in Chile.The artist has held dozens of solo exhibitions, and his works are found in numerous museums as well as public and private collections in the United States, Switzerland, France, Japan, Chile and Brazil.
