In conjunction with the current Casanova: The Seduction of Europe exhibition at the Legion of Honor

Casanova – sophisticated and adventurous, licentious and amorous – probably no other individual so perfectly personifies the spirit of 18th century Venice, the city of masquerade, whose Carnivale had expanded to five months out of the year. Drawing upon the historical Casanova as our personal guide, you’re invited to join in a virtual exploration of the most intriguing city in Europe,   the one urban center that rivaled Paris as cultural capital of the Enlightenment era. This  2  hour exposé by Professor Bruce Elliott of Casanova’s Venice will feature musical strains of Vivaldi and highlight artwork of Venetian masters Tiepolo, Canaletto, Guardi, and Pietro Longhi.

Professor Elliott teaches courses in European history and culture for Lifelong-Learning programs at Stanford, UC Berkeley and Sonoma State, and has on several occasions led groups of student adventurers on travel-study trips to Venice and other historic Italian destinations.

Light reception to follow.

Members $10 | non-members $15
